Some people
were born with a silver spoon in their mouth while others had to struggle
through every point and stage in their lives: being sent home for school fees
frequently and accumulating thousands of shillings in student loan through
college, and that’s just life. It is what it is and you have to survive. But What did you learn from that??
Do you want to live the same way? Do you want your kids to go through the same
financial struggles? I hope not.
I look
around me and see a lost generation. A generation that has not learnt from past
experiences, a generation that is financially illiterate. You want to live and
depend on a monthly paycheck without savings. You feel the need to live like a
celebrity when you clearly can’t afford it. You don’t want to go an extra mile
and make a budget. You don’t even try to equip yourself with the necessary
financial knowledge that will help end the cycle of poverty. You spend most of
your salary in partying/fooling around, what the hell are you celebrating every
week? is your life that awesome?
Get out of that mediocre thinking and start
making change while you are still young and vibrant.
See I know
a thing or two about paychecks, the money barely lasts for two weeks. A few
night outs with your “friends”, some shopping and voila! You are broke, and
your friends are nowhere to be seen. You even ask for advance salary payment.
Payday comes again and the cycle continues. Sad, right??It’s not too late to
change though, learn how to manage your finances and get acquainted with the
various investment options over the internet and choose what’s best for you.
Personally, I draw inspiration from many people but the
most special person I do that from is my 14-year-old sister. She has been
saving since she was 10 years and no amount of temptation would make her spend her savings. She has been putting aside part of lunch money, cash awards received at school
and now with more than 20k in her jumbo junior account she baffles me. She
makes me believe that haba na haba hujaza kibaba. Now you know that you don’t
have to be making a lot to start saving and investing, you can start small and
smile your way to financial freedom.
Just
remember that for every Shilling/Dollar that you save, you are buying yourself
Freedom. The Freedom to stay home with your kids, the freedom to retire and
travel around the world, or the freedom to quit your job. That source of income
you have right now will make it possible for you to start building wealth
today. Think about it.
Do your
future-self a favor and Start by making a budget and sticking to it. This way
you will know how to manage your debts, expenses and Keep track of your assets.
